The nursery on Via Boccaccio

La Giocomotiva in Via Boccaccio is a bilingual nursery that cares for children aged between 3 months and 3 years. It is situated in the centre of Milan, just a short walk from Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper and Cadorna station.

The environments are welcoming and stimulating. The groups are organised by age and are complemented by communal areas, workshops and ateliers dedicated to creativity, movement and discovery. The groups cater to the children’s need for stability; the aim of the educational programme is to encourage interaction between children of all ages, thereby fostering social enrichment.

Settling into nursery

The settling-in period is when each child and their family begin to get to know the nursery and build trust in the surroundings, the people there and the new daily routine.

It is an important step, which requires time and attention. The nursery staff guide children and parents step by step, observing how each child adapts to the new environment and tailoring the process to their individual needs. The model we adopt is Participatory Settling-in, which involves children and parents in the life of the nursery right from the start.

How it works

  • The first few days take place with the presence of a parent or a key adult. The programme involves three days spent together at the centre, taking part in the various activities throughout the day.
  • In the days that follow, the children usually say goodbye to their parents for a few hours.
  • There are no rigid rules; if the children are willing, they’ll be attending full-time within a few days. Otherwise, the transition is gradually extended, following the child’s cues.
  • The nursery teachers welcome and guide the children throughout the process with experience and sensitivity.

Italian–English bilingualism

At Giocomotiva in Via Bonghi, Italian and English are part of everyday life for the children at the nursery and pre-school.

The English language is woven into interactions, moments of care, play, reading, songs and project-based activities. Children thus encounter it naturally and consistently, within real-life and meaningful situations.

Nursery staff, teachers and English teachers work together to create an environment in which both languages serve as tools for communication, discovery and building relationships.

Outdoor Education

At nursery, the outdoor experience is first and foremost about the body, the senses and discovery. In the garden, children can move about, observe changes, encounter natural elements and freely explore the space.

The experience also extends to the area around the nursery, with short outings tailored to the children’s ages. The neighbourhood offers simple yet valuable opportunities to observe the world around us: a garden, a street, a shop, the trees, the sounds and everything that might catch the eye and spark a discovery.

A way, one step at a time, to learn about their surroundings and begin to feel part of them.

The settings and experiences

The nursery’s spaces are designed to encourage independence, social interaction, exploration and a sense of security.

The sections welcome groups at various times of the day. The communal areas provide further opportunities for interaction and allow the children to encounter different materials and forms of expression.

Once a week, in the morning, the children take part in a psychomotor activity designed to help them explore movement, space and their relationships with others through their bodies.

Through play and motor skills activities, they explore their own capabilities and gradually develop confidence and body awareness.

The atelier is a space dedicated to creative expression, where a variety of materials, tools and techniques enable children to explore, experiment and give shape to their thoughts.

The educational programme is enhanced by a psychomotor skills curriculum, which forms part of the children’s daily experiences at the nursery.

From the age of one, an extracurricular music course and a water skills course are also offered as additional activities which families may choose to enrol their children in.

Together with families

Throughout the year, we organise get-togethers with families so that we can spend time together, exchange views, share experiences and support the children on their journey.

  • PorteAperteAChiPorta – informal get-togethers for parents
  • Themed evenings – meetings with experts on topics of common interest
  • Meetings with families – presentation and evaluation of the educational programme and meetings to address any needs that arise
  • Christmas and end-of-year celebrations – moments of shared joy
  • May outing – an outdoor outing for everyone: children, parents and teachers

We involve parents in their children’s learning: dialogue with parents is available at any time of the year, on an individual basis, should the family require it or wish to discuss matters in greater depth.

In January and May, individual meetings are held to review the child’s development; these provide valuable opportunities for educators and parents to exchange views.

Section meetings promote an understanding of ongoing projects and help parents to understand aspects of their children’s social development.

Open Monday to Friday, from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm.

  • Arrival: 08.00 – 09.00
  • First pick-up: 12.30 – 12:45
  • Second pick-up: 16.00

Explore & Become

Even after school hours, there are still opportunities for play, physical activity and discovery.

Explore & Become offers courses and extra-curricular activities led by professionals with experience in early childhood education, held directly on the school premises. Every year, we expand the range of activities on offer to meet the needs of all families.
