The 0–6 programme on Via Bonghi
La Giocomotiva in Via Bonghi is a bilingual nursery and pre-school in the Bocconi/San Gottardo neighbourhood of Milan. The two schools are located in adjacent buildings: the nursery at number 28 and the pre-school at number 30.
We welcome girls and boys aged between 3 months and 6 years, offering them the opportunity to follow a continuous educational journey in the same setting, from the nursery to the pre-school. Educators and teachers work in close collaboration, supporting the children through the various stages of their development and ensuring continuity as they move from one stage to the next.
The nursery has four groups: Little Snails, Snails, Hedgehogs and Giraffes. The pre-school has three: Explorers, Navigators and Argonauts.
The groups provide the children with a stable and familiar environment; throughout the day, we encourage interaction between children of all ages in order to broaden their opportunities for socialising, playing and exploring.

Settling into nursery
The settling-in period is when each child and their family begin to get to know the nursery and build trust in the surroundings, the people there and the new daily routine.
It is an important step, which requires time and attention. The nursery staff guide children and parents step by step, observing how each child adapts to the new environment and tailoring the process to their individual needs. The model we adopt is Participatory Settling-in, which involves children and parents in the life of the nursery right from the start.
How it works
- The first few days take place with the presence of a parent or a key adult. The programme involves three days spent together at the centre, taking part in the various activities throughout the day.
- In the days that follow, the children usually say goodbye to their parents for a few hours.
- There are no rigid rules; if the children are willing, they’ll be attending full-time within a few days. Otherwise, the transition takes longer, depending on how the child responds.
- The nursery teachers welcome and guide the children throughout the process with experience and sensitivity.
Italian–English bilingualism
At Giocomotiva in Via Bonghi, Italian and English are part of the daily routine of the children at the nursery and pre-school.
The English language is woven into relationships, moments of care, play, reading, songs and project-based activities. Children thus encounter it naturally and consistently, within real-life and meaningful situations.
Nursery staff, teachers and English teachers work together to create an environment in which both languages serve as tools for communication, discovery and building relationships.
Outdoor Education
From October to May, once a week, children aged 3 to 6 spend a day in the countryside at Bosco in Città or Cascina Carpana: places where they can explore, move about, play and experience a growing sense of independence.
Transport is provided by private coaches, with the teachers present at all times.
Throughout the rest of the week, outdoor learning continues in the school garden, in the neighbourhood and in nearby parks. The areas around the school thus become part of the educational experience throughout the year and across the different seasons.
The rooms
The nursery and pre-school environments are designed to provide children with opportunities for independence, social interaction, exploration and discovery.
In the classrooms, the children rejoin their own group and go through the different parts of the day. In the communal areas, they meet other groups, discover different materials and experiment with new forms of expression.
Child-friendly furnishings allow everyone to move about, make choices and take part with increasing independence.
In the atelier, children are introduced to a variety of materials, tools and techniques. They can observe, experiment and give shape to their thoughts through creative expression.
Together with families
Throughout the year, we organise get-togethers with families so that we can spend time together, exchange views, share experiences and support the children on their journey.
- PorteAperteAChiPorta – informal get-togethers for parents
- Themed evenings – sessions with experts on topics related to child development and of interest to families
- Meetings with families – sessions dedicated to presenting and discussing the educational programme and the needs that arise during the year
- Christmas and end-of-year celebrations – opportunities to get together and enjoy school life as a community
- May outing – a day outdoors with children, families and educators
We maintain an ongoing dialogue with families throughout the year. You are always welcome to request an individual meeting whenever you feel the need to discuss or explore a particular aspect of your child’s progress.
In January and May, there are also individual meetings designed to review the child’s development and allow educators and parents to share their observations.
Section meetings enable families to find out about ongoing projects, gain a better understanding of the children’s experiences and discuss group life.

Explore & Become
Even after school hours, there are still opportunities for play, physical activity and discovery.
Explore & Become offers courses and extra-curricular activities led by professionals with experience in early childhood education, held directly on the school premises. Every year, we expand the range of activities on offer to meet the needs of all families.
