Route 2–6 on Via Sardegna

La Giocomotiva in Via Sardegna is a bilingual and Full English educational programme for children aged between 24 months and 6 years. It is located in Milan, near Piazza Sicilia.

In the Golden Bridge section, we welcome children aged between 24 and 36 months and support them as they transition to nursery school. From 3 to 6 years old, children can attend one of three Full English sections, organised by age, or a bilingual Italian-English section, which welcomes children of different ages.

The groups cater to the children’s need for stability; throughout the day, we also create opportunities for children of different ages to interact, thereby broadening their scope for building relationships and making new discoveries.

The school is spread over a spacious ground floor, flooded with light through large windows. In the classrooms, the children find a warm and reassuring environment. In the gym in the basement, they can move around, experiment and get to know their bodies better.

In the equipped garden, the children play, explore and observe the changes in nature throughout the year. The on-site kitchen prepares meals and snacks every day.

Settling in

The settling-in period is a valuable time for the child, the family and for us. Its duration and arrangements take into account each child’s age and background.

It always begins with a meeting between the parents and the nursery teacher. This is an initial opportunity to get to know one another, discuss the child’s routines and daily rhythm, and begin to build a relationship of trust.

In the days that follow, attendance at school will increase gradually, taking into account each child’s own pace. For younger children, a family member will also be present during the initial stages.

Full English and Italian-English bilingualism

At Giocomotiva in Via Sardegna, families can choose between Full English classes and a bilingual Italian-English class.

In the Full English sections, the English teachers use English in their interactions, during care times, in play, when reading, in songs and in project-based activities. The language thus forms a natural and continuous part of the whole day.

In the bilingual section, the Italian teacher and the English teacher work together. Italian and English are part of everyday life and become tools for communication, discovery and building relationships within real-life, meaningful situations.

Preference for a particular language programme is indicated at the time of enrolment and will be accommodated subject to availability.

Outdoor Education

Outdoor activities are part of everyday school life. In the well-equipped garden, the children can move about, play, observe nature and experience the space throughout the different seasons.

The experience also extends to the neighbourhood, the parks and the areas near the school, which provide opportunities to observe, ask questions and gradually get to know the local area.

For the children at the Nursery School, from October to May, the school moves out into the countryside once a week: a day out at Boscoincittà or Cascina Carpana, travelled to by private coach together with the nursery staff and teachers. Here, the children have the time and space to explore, move about, spend time together and experience a growing sense of independence.

The settings and experiences

We organise the spaces so that children can move about, make choices, explore and find places where they feel welcome and reassured.

In the sections, the children engage in play, build relationships and experience everyday moments together with their own group. In the communal areas, they also meet children of other ages and explore different materials and forms of expression.

In the gym in the basement, the children can move around and test their motor skills. In the garden, they play, observe the changes in nature and enjoy the great outdoors.

The educational programme is enhanced by a music curriculum, which takes place in the morning and forms part of the children’s experiences during the school day.

During the day, you can also take part in the extracurricular swimming course, which is offered as an additional activity for families who wish to take part.

In the studio, they find materials and tools for painting, crafting, creating and experimenting. Light tables, easels, clay and natural materials allow them to explore different forms of expression and give shape to their own ideas.

Together with families

Throughout the year, we organise family gatherings so that we can spend time together, exchange views, share experiences and support the children on their journey.

  • Open Doors to Those Who Knock – informal get-togethers for parents
  • Themed evenings – meetings with experts on topics of common interest
  • Meetings with families – presentation and evaluation of the educational programme, and meetings to address any needs that arise
  • Christmas and New Year celebrations – moments of shared joy
  • May outing – an outdoor outing for everyone: children, parents and nursery staff

We involve parents in their children’s learning: dialogue with parents is available at any time of the year, on an individual basis, should the family require it or wish to discuss matters in greater depth.

In January and May, individual meetings are held to review the child’s development; these provide valuable opportunities for educators and parents to exchange views.

The section meetings enable families to find out about ongoing projects, gain a better understanding of the children’s experiences and discuss the life of the group.
